The Humphreys closed face spinning reel was one of the first spinning reels introduced in the United States... The way this reel is used is with the thumb latch in the out position you retrieve line . With the thumb latch closed you cast the line, you will find that there isn't any friction on the line in the casting mode. This reel is made up of 4 parts and is a spap to take apart, and will last for ever. The 3A was first introduced in 1946... The best way to fish this reel (and you should try fishing it) is to load it with 4, 6, or 8 lb. mono and put it on a 8 1/2 or 9' fly rod. This reel will toss a 1/4 oz. shad dart a country mile, the down side is that its a 1 to 1 pick up and has no drag but the plate the handle is mounted on is palmable. This is so easy to keep clean... for a reel that is 76 years old it has very little wear... I wish I could make the same claim!
